After working in financial services and previous entrepreneurial ventures, CEO Albert Buu founded Neutronpay in 2018 and was part of the early cohort of companies building on the lightning network. He believed lightning would see earlier adoption in emerging markets so he moved from Canada to Vietnam where his family was originally from. Launching first a lightning payment gateway solution for online and in-person merchants.
In October 2021 Malcolm Weed invested in and joined Neutronpay as COO. Malcolm and Albert had worked together for several years at mass payout company Hyperwallet prior to its acquisition by PayPal. Malcolm also worked in the identity verification space along with some of his own entrepreneurial ventures in 2017 and 2019.
They decided to build out an enterprise API so other businesses could connect to the lightning network leveraging their infrastructure. In early 2022 Herman Ho, VP Engineering joined after having worked for various investment banks in Hong Kong and had met Malcolm a few years earlier.
June 1, 2022 they closed a USD$2.25M seed round from US venture firms which allowed them to scale into a 12-person team with 8 in Vietnam and 4 in Canada. November brought the launch of their mobile app starting in Canada and Vietnam with more countries to follow. Stay tuned as the story continues into 2023.
